Background of the Study
Digital dictionaries have become crucial tools for language learning and preservation, especially in indigenous communities. In Abeokuta, Yoruba communities are increasingly relying on online dictionaries and mobile applications to support language acquisition and literacy. These digital resources offer comprehensive lexical databases, audio pronunciations, and contextual usage examples that facilitate learning and cultural continuity (Olatunde, 2023). They also allow for easy updates and integration with other educational technologies, thereby enhancing both formal and informal learning environments. Digital dictionaries empower users by providing instant access to language resources, bridging the gap between traditional learning and modern technology. Recent studies have shown that such tools can significantly improve vocabulary retention and user engagement (Adewale, 2024). However, challenges such as limited content depth, interface usability, and the need for culturally relevant examples remain. As digital platforms continue to evolve, these dictionaries play a vital role in maintaining linguistic heritage and promoting language proficiency. This study examines how digital dictionaries impact language learning in Yoruba communities in Abeokuta and explores strategies for optimizing these resources.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the proliferation of digital dictionaries, their effectiveness in promoting language learning in Yoruba communities remains underexplored. Many existing platforms suffer from incomplete entries, insufficient audio resources, and a lack of cultural contextualization (Olatunde, 2023; Adewale, 2024). These issues impede the learning process and limit the overall impact of digital dictionaries on language proficiency. There is a need to evaluate the quality and usability of these resources and propose improvements to ensure that they effectively support Yoruba language learning.
